Join the 63Club!

Join the fight for healthy lakes by becoming a 63Club monthly donor

The 63Club recognizes individuals that sustain Clean Lakes Alliance through a recurring monthly donation. As a 63Club member, your donation directly benefits work to clean up our lakes.

As a thanks for your support, you will receive:

  • Ticket pre-sale and hosted lounge access at Frozen Assets (for $19.63 monthly donor level and above)
  • Printed recognition in the monthly Lake-O-Gram
  • Plus, all Friend of Clean Lakes benefits, including free admission to Clean Lakes 101

You’ll also receive invitations to events, updates on work to improve water quality, and the assurance that Clean Lakes Alliance is working on your behalf on a daily basis with city, county, and state officials to put the Yahara lakes at the top of to-do lists. In addition to 63Club benefits, donors who make a gift at the $1,000 or more level ($83.63 a month) are recognized each year through Clean Lakes Alliance’s Yahara Society.

Why is it called the 63Club?

1963 was the year that the Mad-City Ski Team was founded, which founded the Clean Lakes Festival in turn years later. It is due to the Mad-City Ski Team’s initiative and love for the lakes that Clean Lakes Alliance exists. Lands’ End — a company whose heritage is rooted in water — was also founded in 1963 and now serves as a Sustaining Founder to Clean Lakes Alliance. Donors who make a gift at the $1,000 or more level are recognized each year through Clean Lakes Alliance’s Yahara Society. Clean Lakes Alliance is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization. Your donation is tax-deductible!

Thank you for joining the 63Club!

Karin Swanson with Clean Lakes Alliance

“Our Yahara lakes are the center of our community. They are our biggest parks and provide opportunity for recreation, engagement, education, and connection. We must protect our lakes for future generations to use and enjoy.”

KARIN SWANSON
Marketing & Communications Manager

Karin has been the Marketing & Communications Manager at Clean Lakes Alliance since 2018. In her role, Karin creates and manages content for the Clean Lakes Alliance website and social media pages, monthly Lake-O-Gram, and Greater Madison Lake Guide. She also supports major events and produces material for various internal and external communications.

Before coming to Clean Lakes Alliance, Karin worked as a Meteorologist for two television stations in Madison, Wisconsin and two television stations in Wausau, Wisconsin. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist through the American Meteorological Society and a member of the National Weather Association.

Karin also worked for two private forecasting companies, providing forecasts to various cities and counties, radio stations, construction companies, golf courses, power companies, and ski resorts. Karin received her Bachelor of Science degree in Atmospheric Science and in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2000.

Karin’s love of the lakes developed when she was a child living in Minnesota. She spent many summer weekends at her grandparents’ cabin on a lake in northern Minnesota. She learned to swim, canoe, fish, and drive a boat on that lake. Her love of the lakes continued in college when she was a member of the University of Wisconsin Women’s Lightweight Rowing Team. Her (very early) mornings were spent on Lake Mendota rowing with her team, or beside the lake on an ergometer.

Karin lives in Fitchburg with her husband, son, and daughter. When Karin isn’t at work she’s busy playing chauffeur for her kids’ many activities, she enjoys cooking, hiking, camping, and exploring in her free time.

JAMES TYE
Founder & Executive Director

James is the Founder and Executive Director of Clean Lakes Alliance. His connection to the lakes runs deep, as he grew up swimming, waterskiing, and sailing on Lake Mendota. As a lifelong Madison resident, he has seen many changes in the Yahara lakes over the years, and is excited to have the opportunity to work on their behalf.

Currently, his projects include the Yahara CLEAN Compact, marketing and promoting various lake events, creating more community engagement within the watershed, and continuing to expand the alliance of organizations, people, and businesses that care for our lakes.

James has experience working for both nonprofit and for-profit organizations, including Capital Newspapers and Downtown Madison, Inc. While working with Hype Communications on a project for Mad-City Ski Team, James identified the community’s untapped passion for the lakes.

James wrote a business plan for Clean Lakes Alliance in the summer of 2010 and started recruiting the founding board members. The first board meeting convened in January 2011. Now, James directs the strategic mission of the organization in close collaboration with the 50-person Community Board.

Under James’ leadership, Clean Lakes Alliance has received national recognition including the North American Lake Management Society Technical Merit Award in 2014, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Citizen-Based Monitoring Program of the Year in 2018, and GuideStar’s Platinum Level “Seal of Transparency” in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020.

Currently, he serves on the Board of Trustees of Taliesin Preservation in Spring Green and is a member of Wisconsin Union Director’s Advisory Board. He is a member of Wisconsin Realtors Association, Downtown Madison Rotary, Capital Neighborhoods Inc., James Madison Park Master Plan Stakeholder Committee, the Nolan Waterfront Group, Dane County Board’s Healthy Farms Healthy Lakes Task Force, and a Steering Committee for the Capital Area Regional Planning Commission.

James has been recognized for his significant community achievement and leadership as one of In Business Magazine’s 25 most influential people of 2015, Yahara Lakes Association’s Person of the Year in 2016, Madison Magazine’s 2016: One’s to Watch, and Madison’s Super Single in 2015.

James is married to Gabriel Neves, and lives in Madison. They enjoy spending time with their seven nieces and nephews, traveling, and of course, swimming, boating, paddling, and sailing on the local lakes.

Behold The Things We Cannot See

About the author: My name is Karin Swanson and I am a student of the Yahara Watershed Academy. I work for Clean Lakes Alliance as the Marketing and Communications Associate Manager and I am a Meteorologist. I am sharing my journey through the Academy in an effort to expand our community’s knowledge and passion for the Yahara River Watershed.

The forgotten and sometimes unknown pieces of our watershed

“Behold the things we cannot see.” Take a moment to think about that sentence. What does it mean? We are so plugged in these days, but there is an abundance of information we can absorb that isn’t on Google or in a text book. There are actions occurring all around us. We may not know those things are happening, but we must trust and behold those occurrences – even if we cannot see the processes happening.

Yahara Watershed Academy - Feb 2019

Growing a new group of lake leaders

About the author: My name is Karin Swanson and I am a student of the Yahara Watershed Academy. I work for Clean Lakes Alliance as the Marketing and Communications Associate Manager and I am a meteorologist. I will bring you along on my journey through the Academy in an effort to expand our community’s knowledge and passion for the Yahara River Watershed.

Karin Swanson

The 2019 Yahara Watershed Academy (YWA) began on a very snowy February 12th. Snow started the evening of February 11th, with ten inches accumulating by the time the storm ended on the 13th. But the snow didn’t stop our group of students from learning about the Yahara River Watershed.

The YWA is made up of five day-long courses once a month, with students graduating in June. The Academy involves a partnership with the UW-Madison Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies and Edgewood College. Graduates will have received the knowledge and skills to become a network of informed leaders for our watershed.
